"Maternity Ward Services"

About: Sale Hospital / Women's and Children's

(as the patient),

Recently I gave birth at Sale Hospital. Whilst the midwives are generally good there were some other departments that I was not happy with.

Firstly, I gave birth on a Friday and was there over the weekend. The meals on the weekend were utterly ridiculous. I understand that the kitchen serves the whole hospital and whilst some people can't eat much....after giving birth and breast feeding you do need food! Each time I ticked 'large' for the meals and what was served would barely cover a saucer plate. Even if I ticked all options (which isn't much on the weekends), I still would have been hungry!

Secondly, whilst there is a lovely person that cleans in the maternity ward....there was another cleaner that failed to knock every time they entered my room. I mentioned it to the nurses and the fourth time they came in they finally knocked. This was just plain rude and a total shock, as privacy can be a very important issue after just giving birth! I did find myself in a compromising position as the cleaner entered unannounced when the nurses were tending to me. Very disappointed and embarrassed, put in a situation that should never have happened.

Dear Maternity disappointment,

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am very sorry that your experience was so disappointing and compromising for you, at such an important time in your life.

As recently as yesterday I was in a quality project meeting and discussing with senior members of our team about the issue of getting permission to enter our patient's rooms or even the bed area of our patients in multi-bed wards.

We have recently made a video about our "my name is" campaign. This is about every one of us introducing ourselves and saying what we do. For example, for me it is "Hello my name is Frank, I am the CEO .... We think this is very important to get right regardless of where we interact with people across our health service.

We will soon be making a second video to support the next stage which is respecting our patient's "space". By that we mean that the room or part of a multi-bed ward, belongs to the patient, it is our patient's space.

We want everyone that works here, whatever their job: CEO, Director of Nursing, food services staff, cleaners, porters, senior medical consultants, nurses, allied health etc., to get permission to enter your "space" and to seek permission for whatever it is we wish to do for you.

Your feedback has been provided to our maternity, food services and cleaning staff.

If you are happy to contact me and share more details with me we can take a more detailed look at what has gone wrong and hopefully learn more about how we can improve in the future.

I can be contacted on 0351438319 or by email on frank.evans@cghs.com.au

I hope all is going well for you and your new baby. If there is anything we can do for you, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind Regards,

Frank

Dear maternity disappointment,

I am pleased to let you know that we have a large project team working on our person centred care learning project.

We have partnered with a health training organisation to develop a series of learning videos and resources.

We expect to complete the development of the training videos and training resources by mid year.

The project is going well and every member of our staff and volunteers will be provided with this training.

Patients and consumers are helping us and are important members of our project team.

As always please don't hesitate to contact me if I can be on any assistance.

I can be contacted on 0351438319 or by email on frank.evans@cghs.com.au

With kind regards

Frank
