"Excellent care after a bad injury"

About: Ambulance Service of New South Wales Wollongong Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Earlier this year I cut my leg quite badly. Being on blood thinners meant that I bled profusely and my wife needed to contact the ambulance service for assistance.

The Ambulance Service of NSW gave excellent advice on how to manage the wound while we waited. The ambulance arrived quickly and a number of paramedics helped to get the wound dressed and to get me to the hospital promptly. They even offered to help clean up the large amount of blood that had spread on the floor while we waited for them to arrive. We assured them that that wasn’t necessary, however, it was extremely kind of them to offer. I can’t remember all of their names, however, one of them was Dave.

Upon arrival at Wollongong Hospital, I was quickly taken through the ED to what I believe was the ‘Injury Ward’. I was promptly seen by someone, Wendy. I can’t recall if she was a doctor or a senior nurse, however, either way, the care she provided was nothing short of excellent. Due to the thinness of the skin in the area of the wound, she was unable to use standard stitches and ended up going with what I think were ‘sticky’ stitches. I was given good information on how to care for it and was told to attend my local GP to follow up and ensure that it was healing well in the coming days.

Upon visiting my GP, they highlighted the excellent work that was done by the hospital, and that the wound was healing nicely. It has been a number of weeks now, and the wound is nearly healed, however, I am still having to manage it, as it was a very bad cut.

I wanted to write to express my gratitude for the excellent level of care provided by everyone that I encountered. Thank you very much.
