"Day Surgery"

About: Armadale Hospital / Same Day Unit

(as the patient),

I recently attended Armadale Day Surgery unit to have a minor bladder procedure. After I checked in, I was made to wait in the lounge area until a theatre nurse came to collect me. Eventually I was called, went onto the preoperative area and had some checks done. I was told to go back out to the waiting room as there was no beds available. A short time later I was called again to see the anaesthetist and there was still a lack of beds. So I was changed into a gown and made to sit in a chair and wait. Only a few minutes passed and theatre was calling me as the next patient. I still had no bed, but someone was frantically sent to find one. When they finally found a bed I was wheeled around near the theatre doors, but essentially out in the open spaces of the unit. I had two doctors inserting an IV cannula and medications, an ID check was performed at the same time by two nurses and orderly staff were milling around waiting to take me to theatre. It was very overwhelming, I felt a complete lack of privacy and loss of dignity, and became anxious at the big rush around me.

Dear ophiuchustb83,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience with me. I am sorry to hear that it was overwhelming and I’d like to apologise for this.

I have shared your story with our Director of Nursing and Midwifery (DoNM) and Nursing Coordinator for Acute and Surgical Services who are keen to review the processes within the preadmission clinic which will include a review of written and verbal communication provided to patients. The aim will be to improve the overall patient experience and patient flow.
