"Discharge was fraught"

About: Royal Perth Hospital / General Surgery & Ward 6H

(as a carer),

My elderly husband had surgery and iv antibiotics for 4 days after degloving his forearm in a fall.   The wound was left open due to debris concerns.   Due to his vertigo and instability on his feet, Occ Health were going to keep him in but was then discharged.   We were given no wound plan.   Dressings given were incomplete.   His dressing had half the wound exposed, and during the walk journey from the 6H all the way to the car out the front of RPH resulted in 3 severe stumbles that could have been disastrous.   We felt very dismissed.

Dear magpieeb76,

Firstly please let me sincerely apologise for your recent experience at Royal Perth Hospital at what must have been a very traumatic time for you and your husband. We have clearly failed to provide your husband with the level of care that we strive to achieve. While my words at this later date can do little to provide comfort, I do genuinely regret how we let you down in your discharge from our hospital.

Our medical staff and Nurse Unit Manager would be very appreciative of the opportunity to meet with you to discuss further so they can review your husband’s treatment and discharge, and identify where things went wrong to ensure that we learn from his experience. If you are in agreement with this, I invite you to please contact my office on 9224 2219 so that we can arrange for this to happen.

I hope your husband’s wound is healing well.

Dr Lesley Bennett

Acting Executive Director
