"Wait times and staffing"

About: Fiona Stanley Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Got to Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department (ED) in the early hours of the morning recently.

Told the Triage Nurse pain was a 10 and they said we’ll give you some painkillers. 2 hours later we have to go ask for painkillers. 45min later they decide to do OBS on everyone in the waiting room. Got told 4 hours is the longest wait time.

And you wonder why people get angry about sitting around in pain. ED is the last place you want to be. So how about telling people what’s going on, not on a monitor with supposed waiting times and the number of people waiting.

I feel that 4 hours is the target time to meet your KPIs and it’s not based on how sick you are.

Dear rainmp33,

Thank you for taking time to share your recent experience at Fiona Stanley Hospital Emergency Department. I understand it is very frustrating waiting to be seen especially when you are in pain and I was disappointed to hear your pain was not managed during your time in the waiting room.

I have passed your feedback on to our emergency room team, they will review it so we improve pain management for all our patients.

All patients are triaged and are seen based on the severity of their presenting condition and unfortunately, at times of high acuity in ED, patients may have to wait over 4 hours. We do our best to make sure our patients wait as little as possible but sometimes it is unavoidable as it was on the days you came to see us. I encourage you to contact us directly on 6152 4013 or by email FSHFeedback@health.wa.gov.au to provide you specific answers.

Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns on Patient Opinion. Feedback helps us understand where we can make a difference in our services.

Kind regards

Neil Doverty

Executive Director
