My child had a brief and first psychotic episode late this year. It was a terrible shock to all of us and especially for me as I have worked in this field for many years.
I contacted triage and they immediately went into action. Our Outer East CATT team came out within the day to see my child and patiently assessed what was going on for them. Once my child was in the Maroondah IPU, they had the very best of care. My child's strengths were acknowledged and their interests were considered by providing appropriate tools – even in the High Dependency Unit (HDU)! My child was never forced to take medication but rather the staff spent time talking with them to help them make an informed decision. My child was moved to IDU as soon as was practical and was in a lovely private room with a locked cupboard so they could have their personal belongings safely with them. I was treated with respect as their carer and provided with a family meeting on the first day. I was invited to contribute to my child's assessment and provide information about the history etc… This may all sound like it should be that way but I have worked in mental health services for many years and it has not been that way at all. I think the Recovery Framework project lead by Rebecca is certainly effective!
