"My experience at the Emergency Dept."

About: Royal North Shore Hospital

(as the patient),

Recently I was sent to the emergency department at Royal North Shore Hospital by my GP as my ultrasound report was not good and she was too worried for me to wait to see my regular specialist. Everyone from the triage nurse and other staff on duty, junior doctor treated me very well, apart from the main Gynaecology doctor who was the most important decision maker for me that day. I did not feel respected from her at all. She asked me questions so quickly that I did not have any time to think about the answers and she did not listen to me properly either. I didn't feel much at that time as I was in lot of pain and on painkillers and stressed of course, but all she said was it's better if you go and see your specialist. When she was poking my tummy to check pain she stated that the fact I can talk to her while she is poking means that I don't need surgery. I want to say to her that when it comes to uterine pain, I have been living with this my whole life and I don't really know what's "normal" in this case. I have learnt to live with this pain. The main thing which upset me the most was when she asked me where I live. I said my suburb which is like 20min from the hospital and her answer was, "what are you doing here then, you should have gone to another hospital". Then she said that she is sending me home and if anything changes I should go to the emergency but said, "you can go to any hospital closer to you, you don't just have to come here" and all that was with not a very nice tone. After coming out of the hospital, I have been thinking about her attitude towards me and wonder if it was something to do with me or her. Would love to find out. Has been very upsetting for me since. Even my GP was not happy that I was sent home without investigating properly or even taking a biopsy. With all the pain and painkillers, I keep thinking about this incident and had to share.
