Me and my partner were extremely disappointed by one of the Obstetricians at Sunnybank Private Hospital.

We are expecting a first baby and recently did a NIPT blood test. The NIPT (Non-invasive Pre-natal Testing) can tell us the gender, so we requested it. (We are happy either way but just wanted to know in advance).

We recently had an appointment with the doctor to hear the result. The doctor said - do you wanna know the gender? Me and my partner strongly said yes! The doctor told us the gender. We both thought it would be the opposite gender, so we laughed out a lot (with happiness). It is supposed to be one of the memorable moments of our lives.

After the appointment, I realised I forgot to ask for a copy of the blood test result, so I requested it over the phone the next day. In my opinion, the receptionist was not in a good tone, but they sent me a copy by email anyway. Then my partner noticed that the NIPT result actually showed the opposite gender to what the Obstetrician told us. If it’s a boy it shows XY and if it's a girl it shows XX - the results of our baby's gender were clearly shown on the first page. We were so confused and couldn’t stop thinking about it. We both thought the doctor cannot be wrong and maybe we are not reading the report right.

The next day, I decided to email the doctor to clarify and in the evening he called me and said - sorry it’s actually a ... (the correct gender, as per the report). I just couldn’t find the words and cannot describe this feeling. It was just a couple of minutes call.

Sorry is not enough for us, it is supposed to be one of the best moments in our lives. In my opinion, the fact the doctor read the result wrong is such a negligence.

The day we had an appointment seemed to be a busy day and our appointment was pushed back over an hour, but we wouldn’t mind waiting this long if the doctor is really caring. But just because it was a busy day, this mistake shouldn’t have happened.

Me and my partner completely lost our trust in this doctor and decided to change the hospital and we are sure that’s the right thing to do.

We hope no one will experience what we have experienced.
