We have elderly parents, who wish to remain in their home and are trying to maintain their independence. Being quite elderly they are suffering the usual age related issues, onset dementia, bad eyesight, weight loss / frailty. One of our parents has two arthritic knees and has been diagnosed with cancer and our other parent has heart problems and tires easily. We finally convinced them to take advantage of the HACC program a few years ago. They had a cleaner come in once a fortnight, as well as a gardener for a few hours a month. Both staff were wonderful, doing a great job in the very short period of time allowed to them. Along with help from their children our parents were coping quite well at home. Then the gardener was no longer available due to other work commitments, and now the cleaner has left the service. We believe that due to Dept of Health staffing restrictions to maintain their budget, it appears that as casual staff leave the HACC service, the department, is not allowing them to be replaced. So the parents are on a waiting list for their home help. Other community service providers (private) do not extend their help this far south and it appears that HACC will not be allowed to employ replacement staff in the near future. I don't see much hope or help happening.
