"Treatment for my toddler who broke their leg"

My child fell from play equipment at a playpark in Margaret River. I took them to Margaret River Hospital and they were attended to straight away. Dr Shaun organised for an X-ray which showed a fracture to their right femur. My child was given pain relief and fitted with a temporary plaster splint before being moved to a ward.

The level of care we received in Margaret River Hospital was excellent; the nurses were very thorough and caring. The orderly was very kind and caring with my older child while I was with my toddler during their x-ray.

We were later flown to Perth with the RFDS. The St. John’s Ambulance volunteers who transferred us to the airstrip were lovely and the flight nurse was very reassuring and caring.

My child was admitted to PMH where they were fitted with a hip spica cast. The nurses on ward 5B were caring and thorough and the ladies who came through with food and to make beds were lovely.

I found some of the doctors on arrival at PMH to be not quite as attentive and a little insensitive. I was given conflicting information by different doctors which was a little stressful at the time.

Overall my child received very good care, we’re very grateful. My only suggestions for improvement would better patient rapport on arrival to PMH and better communication between doctors at this first stage - my child was almost given a nerve block in preparation to be put in traction when traction wasn’t actually required; this was a bit stressful at the time. A dedicated paid ambulance service in Margaret River would be an invaluable addition to our growing town.

Thanks for taking the time to post your feedback. It is always used to try to improve services.

I’m sorry that you found our staff to be less helpful and attentive than we would hope, as the experience of our children and family receiving care is important to us.

With regards to the delay in treatment and the nerve block, we have looked into this and it would appear that the plan of management was changed by the treating team and traction was later deemed to be unnecessary. I apologise for the change in care and the confusion this has caused you and the injection that your child received which wasn’t needed.
