"Commendation for a nurse"

About: Perth Children's Hospital

(as a parent/guardian),

Sharing my Observations:

At the eye clinic, there was a young mother with 3 children below 5 years of age and 1 newborn in her arm.

Child #3, who is probably under 2 yrs old was having a crying temper tantrum. The mother looked exhausted and in no way whatsoever had control over this child who was clearly very upset.

This went on for a good 20 mins (since we arrived in the waiting room, at least).

3 nurses at the counter watched, the other parents kept their children close to them and I pretended I didn't hear the crying.

Next minute... one of the younger nurses addressed the 3 children - How would you like to do some colouring and drawing?

The kids went quiet and the nurse had them like putty in her hands.

She took out a stack of papers and boxes of coloured pencils and started distributing them to the kids, paying attention to each of them as she addressed them individually.

She engaged them in the activities and it was wonderful to watch. The kids were clearly bored.

I suddenly thought to myself, this nurse remembers why she became a paediatric nurse. She has a way with kids. I am so proud of her!

At this point, her senior nurse looked up from her computer and said,

Ah! I never thought to do that...good on ya!

So whoever you are at Clinic A, PCH... I want to commend you for good work!

Dear Herbafitmum

Thank you for your lovely feedback. At Perth Children’s Hospital our team strive to exemplify a number of values including compassion and excellence. I am delighted that the nurse in the eye clinic demonstrated these values to an outstanding degree.

Your comments have been passed on to the eye clinic team, including the Head of Department, and I will bring them to the attention of our Chief Executive, Dr Aresh Anwar. If the team can identify the nurse she will be nominated for a consumer award.

Thank you again for taking the time to provide this positive feedback and helping us recognise our exceptional staff members who go above and beyond for our patients and their families.

Kind regards

Dr Victor Cheng
