I went to the base hospital in a major regional centre to seek help for a disconcerting sudden change in my sight. The attending doctor diagnosed a detached retina, but advised there was no ophthalmic doctor attached to the hospital who could treat my eye. He recommended I travel to Sydney Eye Hospital for emergency treatment. He rang the hospital to make arrangements and told me to attend the SEH Emergency room the following morning.
I traveled 4 1/2 hrs to Sydney, checked into a hotel (cost roughly $300 - or 2/3 of my weekly aged pension) and attended the SEH Emergency Room shortly after 9am. By almost 1pm I was told I still had a 4 hr wait for treatment for a very serious condition!
There was one Ophthalmologist on duty and a waiting room full of patients.
