"Rejection of referral to see Neurologist"

About: Ipswich Hospital West Moreton Hospital and Health Service

(as the patient),

Last year I moved interstate to Ipswich. I was quite comfortable having both a Neurologist & Ophthalmologist on my side where I was previously located, being diagnosed with Benign Intracranial Hypertension last year, going through lumbar punctures and spending time on Diamox (500mg 4x daily) then down to (250mg 4x daily).

Upon moving to Ipswich I located a permanent GP and begged for a referral to see a Neurologist. The referral was sent to West Moreton Health Care for Ipswich Hospital, and was rejected! Out of fear I contacted my previous Neurologist and was able to lower my dosage of Diamox to (250mg 3x daily). Lately, I am having adverse reactions from being on Diamox too long and urgently need to see an Ophthalmologist & Neurologist in Ipswich or even Brisbane (willing to travel) to be weaned off medication & be formally assessed, as the GP cannot do so. I am tired of waiting! Please help me as I cannot do this alone! :(

Response from Senior Consumer Liaison Officer, Clinical Governance, Queensland Health - West Moreton

Dear Rejected

We are so sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems with your referrals to see a Specialist Doctor at the Ipswich Hospital.

The Ipswich Hospital does not offer a Neurology Outpatients Service and follows referral guidelines. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss why on this occasion your referral has not been accepted and provide you with information to enable your GP to progress your referral at an alternative health facility.

If you would like to speak with us please contact the Consumer Liaison Office on 0409 275 503 during business hours or you can email us at wmh.clo@health.qld.gov.au

Kind regards
