"Turn me away from emergency"

About: Rockingham General Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

I was in Emergency Department at Rockingham Hospital one morning recently, at 8am. All my kids have been very sick, one was vomiting all night, another one has not eaten for two days and they're very weak not able to stand on their feet. All of them are running temperature. I was confused and I don't know what to do other than to take them to ED in the morning. But unfortunately while we were waiting to be called a consultant in ED came out to tell me that ED is for sick people, they will attend to us today but next time they won't attend to us.

I was so uncomfortable and I had to leave ED to see my GP. On getting there they put my kids in isolation room because they are too sick to sit in waiting room. Please everyone help me, I don't know what is happening in case if anything happens to my kids.

Dear greennm75

Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I am sorry that you were made to feel uncomfortable in our Emergency Department (ED) and told that you would not be attended to in the future. I am also concerned that you felt so uncomfortable that you left ED to attend your GP. Please accept my sincere apologies for the way in which you were made to feel and I assure you that your story has been fed back to staff in the ED and will be discussed at the regular staff departmental meetings.

Respectful communication with our patients is of the utmost importance to us at Rockingham Hospital and is something which we strive to achieve within our service at all times. I would like to reassure you that it has been reinforced to staff that it is important to communicate appropriately with patients and carers.

Once again thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I trust your children have made a speedy recovery.

Regards

Kath Smith

Thank you for your response, 3 of the children are back to school today. The one is making progress, their condition is complicated due to asthma.

Thank you.
