"Dialysis"

About: Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital

(as the patient),

I've started dialysis and have been having a really bad run. Apart from extreme coldness, I've had the line blow (very painful and has left severe bruising)

Another line came out.

I couldn't eat or drink till I finished (I almost always eat at 17:00, due to reflux problem) so that caused trouble.

Nurses told me they didn't need ultrasounds for the needling (the line went in much easier and with less pain when it was used)

Food offered to me was all not suitable due to food intolerances.

And some beds gave me a high level of pain and uncomfortableness.

TVs don't work (stuck looking around to pass time by).

So I've been seriously looking into stopping dialysis completely.

Yesterday, I had a fantastic nurse (Kat) who addressed several problems from past visits, including pain, food, TV, and best of all..... she asked a more experienced nurse (Ping) to use ultrasound when needling.

The line went in easily and with little pain.

I wish all sessions could go as smoothly as this last one.

Dear Hoping or help

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience of the Dialysis Service at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Firstly, I would like to say how sorry I am that your initial treatment sessions did not proceed smoothly. I can only imagine how let down and frustrated you must have felt being a new patient to the service and dealing with the outcomes you describe.

I am very glad however, to read of your session this week and the positive impact the nursing care had. I know that the staff too will value both your kind words of appreciation and your feedback related to earlier sessions. This will help them to identify other areas for improvement. I will ensure your story is passed onto them.

Thank you again for your feedback and I do hope that you continue to have such positive experiences with our Dialysis Service.

Kind regards

Geraldine Carlton

Update posted by Hoping or help (the patient)

Well I hoped and prayed that from now on I would have positive treatments, unfortunately last session was bad once again.

The line going in was painful and after 30min line blew again.

The nurse put in another line and that line also blew.

So my left side is huge and is so much bigger than my right side.

More pain and bruising.
