"Excellent patient care at Geraldton Regional Hospital."

About: Geraldton Hospital / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Recently I had the need to visit the Emergency Department of the Geraldton Regional Hospital. My treatment meant that I had to visit the medical staff three days in a row.

My first impression was a little guarded. The security measures were eye opening. One hears stories of the poor treatment of staff at hospitals so I could understand the measures taken.

The triage ladies and the clerical staff were all polite and efficient in processing my case.

A number of staff members stood out for the professional and friendly way in which they dealt with me. (Apologies if the names aren't spot on). 'MJ' handled my initial examination. She found out why I was in Geraldton and was able to relate her experiences in a similar pursuit. On my second visit we discussed the tough side of nursing while she 'filled me up' with antibiotics. Ashley (it could have been Emily- sorry? ) gave me my first 'syringe full' of antibiotics. I was impressed with the quiet, professional way she went about finding an appropriate vein on a dehydrated southerner and administering the 'good juice'. Dr. Ben saw me on all three occasions. He made an accurate diagnosis and provided an effective plan for treatment. Long conversations about similar interests and social issues with the 'Doc' helped pass the time in the E. D.

Management of the hospital should be proud of the whole group of health professionals in their Emergency Department.

Thank you.

Response from Michele Young, Coordinator Executive Services, Executive Services, WA Country Health Service

Dear Clay Target Man

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, your story is the 100th story we have received on Patient Opinion and what a wonderful story it is. Your positive experience is a great example of the work we do every day. The staff at the Geraldton Hospital strive to provide professional patient centred care and it is through feedback such as yours that reinforces that we are doing it well. I will take great pride and delight in passing on your lovely compliment and acknowledgement to our very committed frontline staff and hospital management with a special mention to MJ and Dr Ben.

Patient Opinion strengthens the partnership we have with our service users by allowing patients, families and carers the opportunity to share their personal stories and it really does keep myself and our organisation closely connected with what matters most to our health service users.

Thanks again for taking the time to write and I hope you have recovered well.

Best wishes

Michele
